The 1860 U.S. Census for Fredericksburg, Gillespie County records him about age 42, born in Saxony, Germany, and working as a farmer.
Immediately adjacent in that same census is August Schild — also Saxony-born and close in age — though whether the two men were related has not been established (see below).
