Würzburg, in Bavaria, was home to the Israelitische Lehrerbildungsanstalt, the Jewish Teachers Seminary, one of the last institutions still training Jewish teachers and religious leaders inside Germany by 1938. Erwin Schild enrolled there in April 1938.
During the November 1938 pogrom, a mob attacked Erwin’s dormitory, and the seminary building and its library burned the following day. Erwin later returned to Germany many times as a lecturer, though his return visits were not confined to Würzburg alone.
